Many women are needing or choosing to re-enter the work force, but where?s the work? Often childcare or lowly skilled casual jobs are the only option for women who have years of experience and tertiary qualifications behind them. There are over one million working age people in NZ not currently employed, many of them mums, who need a little extra income, but would also like to raise their own children rather than pop them into day care for 50 hours each week. There are plenty of jobs out there that could utilise the plentiful talents of our mums if employers accept that if you have a job to be done, a busy woman will do it quickly and efficiently ? it?s just one of the two hundred tasks on her list. Why are they sticking to the idea that replacing a good employee is better than retaining a mum who is nuratrim capable and willing to work from home. How does a desk and a commute each day qualify a person to be better at your job?Research shows that there is a largely untapped skill base currently unavailable to employers in the form of educated, talented and skilled mums at home. Current low unemployment levels mean the need for skilled employees is great and with ongoing advances to telecommunications, businesses are better able to provide flexible work options to access a new group of job candidates. Recent research indicates that over 85% of women (many of whom have tertiary qualifications and years of experience) wish to re-enter the workforce at a reduced number of hours per week, but are not able access these work options.Family Friendly work is a term that will be heard more and more is the future.
